In 1891, fees were abolished and state education became free throughout Scotland for children aged between five and fourteen years. In 1913, the Board advised the Department that there was no local demand for continuation classes (for those over the age of fourteen) and consequently, they had no intention of offering them. By February 1915, the number of children in the parish was down to 89, less than half the number recorded in 1873.
